Module Overview

Feedback and Assessment: Module 6

Why Feedback Matters

The research is clear: timely, specific feedback has a very positive effect on student learning outcomes. In fact, it is one of the very best things you can do to affect student performance. Especially online. Feedback keeps students motivated and persevering towards their goals. Learning online can be very isolating if students do not receive timely feedback on how they are doing.

What is Covered in this Module

In this module, we will first define the two types of assessments: formative and summative. This module will focus on formative assessments since this type of assessment is the most critical in helping students learning online.

We will also explore the critical importance of feedback when learning online.

We will explore strategies and tools for you to include more low-stakes formative assessments in your lessons that will help build student confidence and self-efficacy (belief in their success) throughout their learning experience.

If you do this you will address two best practices in online teaching:

Provide specific, timely feedback.

Support student self-regulated learning.

And finally, in the last lesson, we will explore a variety of digital assessment tools you can start using right away to help streamline your assessments when teaching online.
