About this Course

Hi, and welcome to the course on How to Design and Teach Effective and Engaging Asynchronous Online Lessons.

Goal of this Course

This course is designed to provide you with a solid foundation of skills and knowledge to create effective asynchronous learning experiences for your students. All of the content in this course is research-based and best practices. I have carefully curated the content for you to give you the most essential information you need to be an effective teacher online in the shortest amount of time.

Let's review the course.

How the Course is Organized

Intro to Teaching Asynchronously: Module 1

Here we’ll explore the key differences between teaching synchronously and asynchronously and what are the best practices when designing asynchronous learning experiences. We will also analyze how to structure lessons using the Backwards Design method.

Organizing Your Digital Classroom: Module 2

Here we’ll look at the best practices in organizing and designing your course content in a learning management system. We will also explore practical design elements that make it is easy for your students to know what they need to do and where to find the resources they need to do their work independently.

Differentiated Instruction: Module 3

In module 3 we will look at how to differentiate your instruction and materials to reach diverse learners. Digital learning spaces afford many options to differentiate learning. We will examine the Universal Design for Learning framework as a tool to help you build differentiated lessons.

In Module 4 we will consider the importance of building community and connections with your students online. Here we will explore the Community of Inquiry framework which can be used as a guide to foster student engagement and establish your teacher presence in asynchronous learning.

Self-Regulation: Module 5

Module 5 will focus on how to help your student self-regulate their learning. The ability of students to self-regulate their learning is critical when students are learning online. This module will cover key strategies and tools you can use to help students persevere and successfully work independently.

Feedback and Assessment: Module 6

Module 6 will look at how to assess student learning and the importance of providing students with regular, timely feedback. We will also explore digital tools that you can use to easily collect frequent assessments.

Creating Video Lessons: Module 7

And finally, Module 7 will provide you with the techniques and tools to create short, effective videos that you can use to engage students in asynchronous learning. We will also explore screen capture software and other tools to capture interactive teaching.
