Module Overview

Why the Community of Inquiry Framework Matters

You know the importance of establishing good relationships with your students. It happens naturally in a classroom. But what if your classroom is digital? The need to create these trusting relationships is still important but the way you go about it is different. We have models and ways to build community in our physical classrooms. After all, humans have been doing this for a long time. It's what we were built for.

Teaching online is not something we were naturally built for so we need help and guidance for doing this in a digital world. The good news is a lot of research has gone into how to do this online with the result being the Community of Inquiry Framework. It has been designed and testing in online learning environments and it is the gold standard for how to do this work.

As you develop asynchronous lessons you will find this COI framework to be invaluable.

What is Covered in this Module

In this module we will explore how to build community and connections when teaching online using the Community of Inquiry (COI) framework. This framework was developed explicitly for online learning and it has been used extensively for many years to guide teachers on how to develop online experiences that are meaningful and rich. This module covers how your presence as a teacher can be enhanced online. We will explore how to connect with your students and how they can connect with each other, and how you can engage your students in deeper, higher-level thinking.
