Elementary MTSS/PBIS Course Overview

Course Overview

Students need to feel safe and have supportive relationships for their social, emotional, and academic learning to be optimized. The COVID Pandemic, social unrest and related stresses has increased the number of students experiencing trauma, chronic stress, and economic uncertainty. This session will introduce/reintroduce staff to the key features of effective Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Behavior (MTSS) or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports for elementary schools.

We will explore how Tier 1 systems and practices can be implemented to help ALL students be successful while providing a solid foundation for a continuum of supports for those who need more during these challenging times. We will address common misperceptions and questions related to aspects of MTSS/PBIS at the elementary level. Examples from elementary schools in Shoreline and from around the U.S. will be shared. These practices are relevant at the schoolwide, department and classroom levels in virtual, hybrid and in person learning contexts.

Part 1 will focus on key elements of the MTSS/PBIS frameworks and how schools can build clear, positive, shared expectations at multiple levels. (60 minutes video and activities)

Part 2 will address aspects of MTSS/PBIS that are often misunderstood, acknowledgement systems and consistent discipline systems. We will explore how both aspects of Tier 1 are crucial to building a positive school and classroom climate. (60 minutes video and activities)

Both parts equal 120 minutes and two clock hours.

Please note that the successful completion of two short, multiple choice quizzes is required for obtaining the certificate of completion and clock hours. The answers to the questions are all found within the presentations.
